John joined Smith & Williamson in 1983 with a business tax background and later moved into VAT and has now specialised in this area for over 25 years. John’s main VAT advisory areas are cross border international transactions, where he has built up a network of professional advisers, and property transactions, where he has attracted a high profile following of investors and developers over the years. Other areas of expertise are in the health and welfare, not-for-profit, education and housing association sectors.
John is a regular speaker at conferences, and is a Fellow and Council member of The Chartered Institute of Taxation, and sits on the VAT & Indirect Taxes Sub-Committee of the CIOT, and the Land & Property Liaison Group with HM Revenue & Customs. He also represents the CIOT on the Confédération Fiscale Européenne, which makes representations to the European Commission on taxation matters. He is a member of The VAT Practitioners Group which is the leading professional body in the UK for advisers dealing with all aspects of taxation.
John sits on the Nexia Tax Committee which is the global network of advisers of which Smith & Williamson is a leading member. He also Chairs the Global Indirect Taxes Group for Nexia International.
